Quick answer
Windows 10 and 11 do not natively support HEIC. Windows 11 Photos app can open some HEIC files but not all. Workaround: convert HEIC to JPG using Cloudconvert or the HEIC to JPG Converter Chrome extension.
Your Windows 11 laptop has a Photos app. You drag a HEIC from iPhone into Windows. Nothing happens. No preview, no thumbnail, the file becomes a mysterious icon. This is by design: Microsoft has not licensed HEIC support.
Windows 10: zero HEIC support
Windows 10 does not open HEIC files at all:
- File Explorer shows no thumbnail.
- Photo Viewer refuses to open it.
- Paint does not recognize the format.
- Email clients reject HEIC attachments.
Only solution: convert to JPG before using.
Windows 11: partial HEIC support (contradictory)
Windows 11 Photos app can sometimes open HEIC, but inconsistently:
- Recent HEIC from iPhone 13+: Photos app opens it, shows thumbnail.
- Older HEIC from iPhone 7-12: Photos app refuses, shows error.
- HEIC from online converter: hit or miss, depends on how HEIC was created.
This is because Windows 11 has a HEIF decoder but it is incomplete and buggy. Do not rely on it.
Why Windows does not officially support HEIC
HEIC licensing:
- HEIF codec is owned by MPEG-LA patent pool.
- Licensing fee per Windows license is non-zero.
- HEIC adoption is still under 20% globally.
- Supporting HEIC is not worth the licensing cost to Microsoft.
This is not Apple lock-in. It is Microsoft cost-benefit analysis.
Windows workarounds
- Install a third-party viewer: IrfanView (free) can open HEIC on Windows 10/11. Not very polished, but works.
- Convert to JPG: 30 seconds, solves the problem permanently. Chrome extension or Cloudconvert.
- Use Google Photos: Upload HEIC to Google Photos, it auto-converts to viewable format on web.
- Upgrade to Windows 11 if stuck on 10: Windows 11 has partial HEIC support (not reliable, but better than nothing).
