How to Open HEIC Files on Windows 10 and 11

You copy iPhone photos to your Windows PC and double-click one. Nothing opens. File Explorer shows the files with a generic icon — no thumbnail, no preview, no way in. This is the HEIC problem on Windows, and it affects millions of people every day.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 both lack native HEIC support because the HEVC codec that HEIC requires is licensed technology. Microsoft distributes it separately, not as part of the base OS. The good news: there are several reliable solutions, and at least one of them requires zero downloads from the Microsoft Store.

Method 1: Chrome Extension (No Store Downloads Required)

If you have Chrome installed (and most Windows users do), this is the fastest path. The extension converts HEIC to JPG locally in your browser using WebAssembly — no uploads, no Microsoft Store, no codec installs.

1. Install the extension Visit the HEIC to JPG Converter on the Chrome Web Store and click "Add to Chrome". Installation takes about 10 seconds.
2. Open Chrome and load your HEIC file Press Ctrl+O or drag your HEIC file directly into a Chrome tab. Chrome will display the file (may show a black image before conversion — that's normal).
3. Click the extension icon Find the HEIC Convert icon in your Chrome toolbar (pin it first if needed via the puzzle piece menu). Click it to open the conversion panel.
4. Convert and download Choose JPG format and quality level, then click Convert. Your JPG downloads to your Downloads folder immediately.

Method 2: HEIF Image Extensions (Microsoft Store)

This method adds HEIC support directly to Windows, so Files Explorer shows thumbnails and the Photos app can open HEIC files natively.

1. Open Microsoft Store Press the Windows key, type "Microsoft Store", and open it.
2. Search for HEIF Image Extensions In the search bar, type "HEIF Image Extensions". Look for the app published by Microsoft Corporation.
3. Install the free version Click "Get" or "Install" on the free Microsoft version. There is also a $0.99 Apple HEVC Video Extensions pack that improves compatibility — the free version handles most photos fine.
4. Restart File Explorer Once installed, right-click your taskbar and select "Task Manager". Find "Windows Explorer", right-click it, and select "Restart". HEIC thumbnails should now appear.
5. Open your HEIC file Double-click any HEIC file in File Explorer. Windows Photos will open it directly.

Method 3: Windows Photos App (After Codec Install)

Once the HEIF Image Extensions codec is installed, the built-in Photos app becomes your primary HEIC viewer. You can also use it to convert single HEIC files to JPG:

1. Open the HEIC file in Photos Double-click the HEIC file. Windows Photos opens it.
2. Click the three-dot menu In the top-right corner of Photos, click the "..." menu.
3. Select Save as Choose "Save as" and change the file type to JPEG in the save dialog.

This works for individual files but becomes tedious for multiple photos. For batch conversion, use the Chrome extension or Method 4 below.

Method 4: iCloud for Windows

If you sync your iPhone photos with iCloud, Apple's iCloud for Windows app automatically downloads photos as JPG files — translating HEIC on-the-fly as part of the sync process.

1. Install iCloud for Windows Download from the Microsoft Store or from Apple's website (apple.com/icloud/icloud-for-windows). Sign in with your Apple ID.
2. Enable Photos sync In iCloud settings, enable "Photos" and choose a local folder for your library.
3. Access your photos as JPG iCloud for Windows downloads HEIC photos and automatically saves them as JPG in your designated folder. New photos from your iPhone sync automatically.

The limitation: this only works for photos already in iCloud. If you transfer photos via USB cable or AirDrop to a Windows PC, they remain in HEIC format and still need conversion.

Comparing the Methods

Why Windows Doesn't Support HEIC by Default

HEIC is based on the HEVC (H.265) video codec, which is patent-licensed technology. Microsoft pays licensing fees to distribute HEVC support and passes some of these costs on to users (via the $0.99 HEVC Video Extensions pack) or includes it only in certain Windows versions. The free HEIF Image Extensions codec provides basic HEIC viewing but uses a less complete HEVC implementation.

In contrast, Apple owns the HEIF and HEVC licensing for iOS/macOS use through their membership in the MPEG LA patent pool, which is why iPhones and Macs handle HEIC natively without extra steps.
