Quick answer
Word does not accept HEIC image insertions. Convert HEIC to JPG first, then insert the JPG into Word on Windows or Mac.
You try to Insert > Pictures into a Word document from your iPhone backup folder. Word does not recognize HEIC format. The file browser skips over all your HEIC photos, showing only JPGs.
Word image format support
Accepted: JPG (recommended), PNG, GIF, BMP. Not accepted: HEIC, WebP, TIFF.
Both Word on Windows and Mac reject HEIC
Word on Mac and Windows both do not accept HEIC. Google Docs (web) accepts HEIC on Mac/Chrome only, rejects on Windows. PowerPoint and Excel have same limitations as Word.
30-second fix: convert HEIC to JPG
- Use HEIC to JPG Converter or Cloudconvert.
- Drag HEIC photos, click Convert, download JPG.
- In Word, Insert > Pictures > select JPG.
- Image inserts normally. Done.
Batch inserting multiple photos
For 10+ photos: Batch convert all HEIC to JPG (2-5 min), create JPG folder, Insert > Pictures > select folder, multi-select all JPGs. All images insert at once.
